Staying safe this Bank Holiday Weekend

We are due to have some dry days for the long weekend so it’s a good chance to brush up on safety tips if you are having BBQs or heading to the park with the family.

If you plan to have friends or family over or are attending a barbecue, here are some reminders to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable summer.

Bonfires, BBQs, and campfires should be attended at all times and only lit in an area where you have permission and suitable safety measures.

Do:

  • Check that the barbecue you are using is in good working order before you start cooking.
  • Keep the barbecue on a flat surface, and away from any potential hazards such as trees and shrubs, decking, fences, or sheds.
  • Keep children and pets away from the cooking area.
  • Have a bucket of water or sand or a garden hose nearby for emergencies.
  • Make sure the barbecue is cool before trying to move it.
  • Use appropriate fire lighters or starter fuel.

Don’t:

  • Use the barbecue if you notice any faults with it.
  • Leave your barbecue unattended.
  • Put ashes straight into a bin as they could melt the plastic or start a fire.
  • Take a barbecue inside (always allow for ventilation).
  • Use more charcoal than you need.
  • Use the barbecue on a balcony, decking, or too close to your home.

Please note - barbecues are not permitted in any communal area or on Fairhive property without express permission. If you are unsure if you can use a barbeque in your garden, please check your tenancy agreement.

It’s still warm enough to have the windows open during the day (although not quite the heatwave we had earlier in the year!). Be sure to check your pets and any small children are supervised around open windows and if you have window restrictors in your home we strongly advise that these are not tampered with.

Restrictors prevent windows from opening further than 100mm, so they are more than suitable for airflow and ventilation. They can be disengaged for emergency use but should not be removed for any other reason.

If you are heading out and happen to be near a lake or running water this weekend, please stay alert to slippery surfaces and keep in mind the safety of yourself, any vulnerable persons with you, and the wider public. Be sure to take warm clothes with you if you are swimming as it can get cold if the wind picks up and the sun goes in!
