Building Careers Through Apprenticeships

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re proud to highlight our long-standing commitment to developing future talent through our apprenticeship programme.

Learning from Experience

We spoke to Dean Gill, Executive Director of Operations, whose career began as an apprentice and has since progressed into a senior leadership role.

“An apprenticeship was the ideal starting point for my career. After leaving school, I wanted something practical and hands-on rather than continuing in a classroom environment. Earning while learning also gave me early financial independence, which really appealed to me.

Learning on the job suited my learning style. Watching experienced colleagues, asking questions, and applying new skills in real situations helped me build confidence quickly and understand how the industry really works.

My apprenticeship gave me a strong foundation in carpentry and joinery and sparked a wider interest in the building and construction sector. After completing my advanced qualification, I continued studying part-time to gain a broader building and surveying qualification. This opened the door to a surveying role, then my first management position, and several roles across the housing sector.

Today, I’m Executive Director of Operations, responsible for maintaining 9,500 homes and supporting approximately 25,000 residents. The curiosity and appetite for learning that my apprenticeship developed has stayed with me throughout my career.

I was fortunate to learn from people who genuinely wanted to support my development, and that experience is one of the reasons I’m a strong advocate for our apprenticeship programme. I’m passionate about passing on knowledge and creating the same opportunities for others.

Apprenticeships are hugely valuable for us. They give people a real start to their careers while helping us build the skills we need to succeed over the long term.

For anyone unsure about long-term prospects, my advice is simple, if you want to earn while learning and build skills that will stay with you for life, an apprenticeship is a great place to begin.”

Our Apprenticeship Programme

With over 13 years of experience delivering apprenticeships, we have consistently supported multiple apprentices each year. Recruitment is reviewed annually to align with business needs, with operative roles typically starting each September.

We’ll be continuing the conversation throughout National Apprenticeship Week on our social media channels, particularly LinkedIn.
