Getting your home winter-ready
As the temperature drops, it’s a good idea to give your home a quick check-over to make sure everything’s working as it should. A bit of preparation now can help prevent problems later and keep you safe, warm and comfortable through the colder months.
We’ve pulled together some simple tips to help protect your home from cold weather damage and avoid unexpected issues this winter.
And if rising living costs are a worry, we’ve also included information on lowering your bills, accessing financial support, and where to turn for extra help if you need it.
Check your heating and boiler
Before winter really sets in, take a moment to make sure your heating system is working as it should. Keeping your home at a minimum of 18°C is important, if temperatures drop too low, it can affect your health and may cause damage to your home.
- Boiler pressure – Most combi boilers have a pressure gauge on the front. It should usually sit between 1 and 1.5 bar, typically in the green zone. If it’s not, your instruction manual will guide you through topping it up or releasing pressure.
- Timers and thermostats – Set your heating to come on when you need it and switch off when you don’t, so you’re not wasting energy.
- Save on energy – Switch your heating off when you’re out and consider turning it off 30 minutes before you leave. The residual warmth will keep your home comfortable without using extra energy.
Annual gas safety checks
Gas safety checks are an important part of keeping your home safe. Faulty appliances can cause fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and other serious risks.
We’ll contact you when your annual gas safety check is due, please make sure to keep your appointment. If you need to rearrange, let us know as soon as possible.
If you’re a leaseholder or shared owner, it’s your responsibility to have your own appliances serviced by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Prevent burst pipes
Frozen or burst pipes can cause major damage in winter, but a few simple steps can reduce the risk:
- Report any small leaks before they get worse
- Keep your heating on a low setting if you’re going away
- Fix dripping taps to prevent freezing
- Make sure your boiler service appointment goes ahead
- Know where your stopcock is and how to turn it off in an emergency
- If you have an outside tap, turn off the supply during winter and leave the tap open to let any remaining water drain away
If a pipe does freeze, turning off the water at the mains quickly can help minimise damage.
Keep the warmth in
A well-insulated home stays warmer for longer and can save you money on energy bills.
- Draught-proofing doors and windows can make a real difference
- DIY draught strips are an easy, affordable fix
- Adding a draught excluder to an unused chimney can also help reduce heat loss.
Even small changes can make your home feel more comfortable and help cut costs.
Reducing condensation
When warm air meets cold surfaces, it can create condensation, which may lead to damp and mould.
You can help reduce moisture by:
- Opening windows or trickle vents regularly
- Using extractor fans when cooking or bathing
- Wiping down windows and sills daily in colder weather.
If you’re struggling with persistent damp or mould, please let us know, we’re here to help.
