10 ways to save energy at home
As energy costs continue to impact households across the UK, there are plenty of simple, low-cost steps you can take to reduce your bills and make your home more energy efficient. Here are 10 practical tips to help you save energy every day:
1. Switch off standby appliances
Many appliances use power even when they’re not in use. Turn devices off at the plug to prevent energy from being wasted.
2. Use LED light bulbs
LEDs use up to 80% less electricity and last much longer than halogen or incandescent bulbs.
3. Take shorter showers
Reducing your shower time to four minutes can save both water and energy, especially if you have an electric shower or hot water cylinder.
4. Wash clothes at 30°C
Most detergents work well at lower temperatures, helping you cut energy use with every cycle.

5. Only boil what you need
Kettles are one of the most energy-hungry appliances. Fill it with just enough water for your cuppa.
6. Block draughts
Use simple measures such as draught excluders, door seals, or rolled towels to keep warm air in and cold air out.
7. Make the most of natural light
Open curtains during the day to reduce the need for electricity and help warm your living spaces naturally.
8. Keep radiators clear
Avoid placing furniture directly in front of radiators, this allows heat to circulate more easily and warms your room more efficiently.
9. Use your thermostat wisely
Turning your thermostat down by just 1°C can save money each year without affecting comfort too much.
10. Report repairs early
If you notice issues like faulty heating, damp, or draughty windows, report them to us as soon as possible. Fixing the problem quickly can prevent energy waste and keep your home comfortable.
