Feeling the Heat? A Few Ways to Keep Cool
We know it’s been a warm summer, and you’ve likely seen plenty of advice about keeping cool. But with today and tomorrow bringing the hottest weather of the year so far, it’s worth another reminder to take care of yourself and others.
We know that keeping your home comfortable can make a big difference when temperatures rise. While we can’t turn down the thermostat on the weather, there are some simple things you can do to help keep yourself and your home cool.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Close curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day and open windows when it’s cooler outside, where it’s safe to do so.
- Keep internal doors open where suitable to help air circulate, but close doors to particularly hot rooms if that helps keep the rest of the home cooler.
- Avoid the hottest part of the day — if you can, stay out of direct sunlight between 11am and 3pm.
- Protect yourself if you do head out — wear light, loose clothing, a hat and suncream.
- Check in on others — a quick call or knock on the door to an older neighbour, relative or anyone who may be more vulnerable to the heat could make a real difference.
When the weather reaches its hottest, it’s important not to underestimate the impact of heat, particularly on older people, young children and those who may be more vulnerable.
